Global Forum Purpose
Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) are products designed to simultaneously protect women from unintended pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections. The purpose of this two-day meeting is to provide the opportunity for a multidisciplinary, multinational group of experts to help shape the evolving strategy for accelerating the development of MPTs for those regions in the world with a substantial unmet need for these prevention options.
Global Forum Objectives
- Review the current status of MPT development and highlight needs and potential challenges
- Identify the types of populations, in specific geographic regions, most likely to benefit from MPTs
- Significantly expand international multisectoral and multidisciplinary input into product development plans for MPTs
- Expand discussion of the critical path for regulatory approval of MPTs beyond the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), to include the views of African, Asian, and European regulatory authorities
- Foster a global perspective and encourage international support for the MPT Initiative
- Seek consensus on next steps
Background
Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) are a new category of user-friendly technologies and products that could enable women worldwide to protect themselves simultaneously against HIV, other sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, and/or unintended pregnancy, thus allowing women greater control and independence in their health choices. Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT) was created in 2009 to unite researchers, developers, advocates, policy makers and donors around the need for multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) that will prevent unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV), and/or other reproductive tract infections. USAID provided initial funding to launch the IMPT and its core programs.
The Global Forum on MPTs will convene a small multidisciplinary cadre of experts from around the world working in the areas of family planning, HIV/AIDS and STI prevention, product developers, regulators, social scientists, policy makers, clinicians, and donors to help shape the evolving strategy for accelerating the development of MPTs for those regions in the world with a substantial unmet need for these prevention options.
