Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) at Microbicides 2010 Conference

May 22-25, 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA

MPT related posters and presentations
While there are few MPTs currently available, there are many exciting MPTs in development around the globe.  Researchers shared their work at the Microbicides 2010 conference held in Pittsburgh, PA earlier this year. Here are the highlights from the conference

Probiotics: the Potential for a Live Microbicide
The Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT) promotes awareness and support for innovative strategies that improve the lives of women and their families through the prevention of multiple adverse health outcomes, namely sexually transmitted infections, including HIV; unintended pregnancy; and/or other reproductive tract infections. Probiotics, or live bacteria, are in development which show promise as an MPT, or 'Live Microbicide', which could prevent not only HIV but other reproductive tract infections, such as bacterial vaginosis. Our field has long anticipated technologies that can simultaneously prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Researchers are working on new formulations and adapting existing technologies – our hope for efficient, effective multi-purpose prevention strategies is very much alive.

Learn the latest in research developments and be part of the conversation shaping this exciting movement at Reproductive Health 2009:

Plenary session with Guttmacher Lectureship award winner Henry Gabelnick presenting the latest on microbicides, vaccines, devices, and more
Lunch & Learn session with Wayne Shields and Bethany Young Holt of the CAMI/Public Health Institute and UC Berkeley introducing a new initiative designed to unite key players toward the common goal of multi-purpose prevention technology development. This new coalition is eagerly seeking the input of providers.
